ABOUT KARUČ

Most precious hidden jewels of Montenegro

Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans with surface area around 530 km2. Approximately 2/3 of the lake belong to Montenegro, while 1/3 belongs to Albania. Montenegrin part of Lake Skadar was declared a National Park in 1983. So far there have been registered  approximately 281 bird species and 50 fish species. It is the most representative ornithological object in Montenegro and as such it is best explored by cruising. The lake itself is a crypto depression, which means that its bigger part is below the sea level. In the 1995 Ramsar Convention Lake Skadar is added to the List of Wetlands of International importance. Besides enjoying the natural beauty of the lake, its shores covered with reeds and water lilies, in addition to this the flocks of water birds can be seen as well. Near Karuč, a fishing village which is a starting point of the cruise, there is a sunken ship named “Skender-beg”. It is the largest steamboat which had sailed the waters of Lake Skadar from the time of the Kingdom of Montenegro.
WHAT YOU CAN SEE

Nature

Montenegrin part of the Lake Skadar was declared a National Park in 1983 (IUCN category II). As an internationally important area for birds, Lake Skadar in 1989 acquired the status of IBA and it has been on the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance since 1995, especially as a wetland birds’ habitat.

There are three bird habitats inside the national park, namely: Pančeva oka, Crni žar, and Manastirska tapija. On the lake live 264 species of birds, 73 species are nesting migratory birds, 18 species are regular visitors, 45 are winter guests and 12 species regularly spend summer without nesting. The reason for such a large variety of birds is ecological and geological peculiarity as well as undisturbed ecosystem.

Most often you can see cormorants, red, white and blue herons, grebes, mallards, Moor hens and others. A place of honor certainly occupies the Dalmatian pelican (Pelicaneus crispus). With a length of 160-190cm, weight 10-12kg, and a wingspan of up to 3m fascinates a large number of ornithologists who come every year because of these unusual birds.

MORE ABOUT KARUČ

History

First on this site more than 200 years ago, precisely in 1808, Ceklin people built a tower on a hill overlooking the coast, in order to pay tribute to his Metropolitan, a man who would in the history of Montenegro be identified by the name – St. Peter of Cetinje. According to historical records, Petar I Petrovic Njegos used to reside in this tower in the period from November to April.

Karuč Bay has always been protected from the wind, there was always enough fish, and the climate was always mild. All this was a good enough reason to live here in winter period. There are some records that Peter I himself participated in the construction of this facility, while according to some data the supervisor of the construction was Bela Colov.

Later, the tower had a defensive character as well, especially in the time of the attack of Omer Pasha on Montenegro in 1862. At the end of the 19th century this building was Karuč school, managed by the teacher Mihajlo K. Popovic.
